Ten Must Have Household Tools

Here is is an extremely useful list from home repair website Repair Clinic. This list of ten small tools or cleaning solutions will help you save money, keep your house sanitary and help prevent house fires (from lint build up in the dyer hose). We got this list from our Aunt Barbara and if she recommends home tips, we listen!

#1 Dryer Vent Cleaning Brush

At least once a year you should clean out the plastic house that vents your dryer from the back to remove lint that the lint filter doesn’t catch. Without cleaning the fibers can trap the heat and cause a fire.

#2 – Home Energy Use Meter

Plug appliances into this to meter and it will tell you how much it costs to run them. It displays the usage in kilowatt hours – the rate your energy bill is calculated – and so you can get the costs by day, week or year. Use it to figure out whether it’s worth buying a new large appliance or unplugging other ones when they aren’t in use.

#3 – FloodStop – Emergency Auto-Water Shut Off Valve

FloodStop is a point of use, leak detection and automatic water shut-off system designed for residential, condo and apartment dwellings. It uses automatic, motorized ball valves to shut off the water supply when it senses a washing machine leak.

#4 – Fuel Stabilizer for Mowers and Outdoor Power Equipment

This gasoline additive prevents fuel from going stale for up to 24 months. This is important to keep seasonal machines such as snow blowers and lawn motors starting and working properly. Without treatment old fuel can coagulate and prevent the motor from starting. For all 2 & 4 Cycle Gasoline Engines. 4.2 Fl. Oz. treats 10 Gallons of Gasoline
This item is not for sale in Catalina Island.

#5 – Fin Straighteners To Keep Air Conditioners Vents Clear

When the aluminum vent in the back of air conditioner gets bent and flattened (or a name written in them) it reduces the efficiency of the unit, makes the motor work harder and doesn’t cool the air as well. Robinair Fin Straightener is a handy six-in-one straightener to clean and straighten condenser and evaporator coil fins. Straightener sections are clearly marked for fin size. The tool is compact enough to use even in confined spaces.

#6 – Six-sided String Line Replacement for Yard Trimmer

A string trimmer can turn a mediocre yard into a well-manicured masterpiece. The most important step in keeping your trimmer running well is to replace the line once or twice per year, depending on your usage.  String trimmers have spools designed to hold line of a specific size so the most important step is to purchase a replacement line with the correct diameter size, which varies from 0.065 to .125 inches. Always follow the manufacturer’s listed requirements.

TIP: What’s the difference between line that’s round or cut with three or six-sided profiles?

Line with a three or six-sided profile provides a faster, cleaner and noticeably more professional cut than the standard round shape.

#7 – Vacuum Hose for Cleaning Appliances

This particular tool is listed for cleaning the dryer vent but it can also be used to clean the vents and condensers of refrigerators and other small machines that have motor vents. Keeping these cooling areas clean makes your machine run cooler which means running longer and saving you money by using less electricity. Help your appliances “Work smarter not harder”.

#8 – Refrigerator Air Purifier and Deoderizer

Refrigerator Air Purifier – Keeps food fresh 3 to 4 times longer. Utilizes ozone-purification technology to eliminate bacteria. Naturally neutralizes odors; breaks down pesticides on produce. Built-in microprocessor; no filters to replace; requires 4 “D” batteries. Measures 5 by 2-3/4 by 5 inches; 1-year limited warranty.

Refrigerator Deodorizer – This refrigerator deodorizer keeps fruit and produce fresher longer. It absorbs powerful refrigerator odors, including onion, garlic and fish. It contains high absorbency activated charcoal. 50 times more powerful than baking soda. Replace every 3 months. To use, remove protective film and place on refrigerator shelf. For best results, use with Ice Cube and Freezer Deodorizer.

# 9 –  Long-Handled Bristle Brush

More appliance coil cleaning? They say this one is good for those coils in the hard-to-reach back. Or just turn the machine around.

#10 – Ice Machine Cleaner

It’s kind of gross not to clean your ice maker every now and then if you think about it. Use this cleaner for sparkling under-counter or free-standing ice machines. It’s designed to remove scale and deposits from bins, evaporators and other parts.
